Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accounting Controller to oversee all accounting operations for our multi-state electrical contracting company. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the construction industry, particularly with multi-state operations, payroll compliance, and state and federal tax filings. This role will ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and efficient accounting systems to support ongoing growth and operational success.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and budgeting processes.
  • Coordinate the year-end audit and manage relationships with external auditors and tax advisors.

Payroll & Tax Compliance

  • Oversee multi-state payroll processing, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
  • Manage the preparation and filing of payroll tax returns, including:
    • Federal and state income tax withholdings
    • State unemployment insurance (SUTA)
    • Federal unemployment tax (FUTA)
    • Social Security and Medicare (FICA)
  • Ensure compliance with all multi-state payroll tax registration and filing requirements, staying current on applicable laws and tax rate changes.
  • Support accurate reporting and filing for subcontractors and independent contractors (e.g., 1099s) as well as yearly employee W2’s.
  • Assist with accurate reporting and filing of local and state sales tax.
  • Assist in Credit Card reconciliation process
  • Assist in Bank Reconciliation process

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Recommend and oversee financial systems and technology improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including HR and Operations, to support company-wide financial compliance and performance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a construction industry setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-state payroll processing and payroll tax compliance, including:
    • State and federal withholding taxes
    • Unemployment insurance filings
    • Payroll tax registrations and multi-state compliance
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting best practices.
  • Proficient in construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or similar).
  • Strong Excel and ERP system skills.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication abilities.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of sales/use tax compliance related to construction operations.
